# What Happens When Conversations Keep Getting Avoided

July 9, 2026 5 min read

You take a breath, ready to say it. Ready to finally bring up the thing that’s been sitting between you for days, or even weeks. And in that split second, the atmosphere shifts. Your partner suddenly remembers an urgent email, or becomes fascinated by something on their phone, or simply says, “I’m exhausted. Can we not do this tonight?”

And just like that, the conversation is over before it even began. The topic is shelved, and an uneasy peace is restored. But the feeling – that knot in your stomach, the tension in the air – doesn't go away. It just gets packed down, ready to resurface later.

This pattern of [avoidance is incredibly common](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/avoidance-in-relationships). From the outside, it might even look like you have a perfect relationship with no arguments. But inside, it can feel profoundly lonely.

### Why We Avoid Difficult Conversations

It’s tempting to see avoidance as a deliberate, hurtful act. But in my experience as a therapist, that’s rarely the whole story. More often than not, avoidance is driven by fear.

Fear of starting a massive row. Fear of hearing an answer you don’t want to hear. Fear of hurting your partner’s feelings, or of being blamed yourself. For many, staying silent feels safer than the potential explosion of a difficult conversation. It’s a short-term strategy to protect the relationship, but one that unfortunately tends to backfire in the long run.

Sometimes the cause is less about fear and more about exhaustion. When life is relentless, the idea of having a deep, meaningful chat can feel like another exhausting task on an already endless list. We explore this more in our article, _When Life Gets Loud: Is Your Relationship Paying the Price?_

### The Slow Drift Apart

When you repeatedly sidestep important topics, a few things start to happen. Firstly, the number of ‘safe’ subjects begins to shrink. You might find you can talk about work, the kids’ schedules, or what to have for dinner, but the conversation stops there. There's no room for vulnerability.

Secondly, assumptions start to fill the silence. Without clear communication, your brain will create its own narrative about what your partner is thinking or feeling. This is where resentment and misunderstanding quietly take root.

This emotional distance almost always leads to a loss of physical intimacy. It’s incredibly difficult to feel close and connected to someone when you’re both walking on eggshells. This is a common entry point for couples seeking _intimacy issues counselling_, trying to find their way back to each other.

And finally, the silence erodes trust. When you can’t talk openly, you can’t solve problems as a team. This is especially true if the avoided subject involves a past hurt, like [an affair](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/how-we-can-help/infidelity-or-affairs). As we discuss in our post, _After an Affair: Can a Relationship Really Recover?_, honest dialogue is the only foundation for rebuilding.

### Is a Pause the Same as Avoidance?

A quick point of clarification: choosing to pause a heated discussion is not the same as chronic avoidance. Agreeing to talk tomorrow when you’re both calmer is a very healthy communication skill. That’s a strategic delay.

Avoidance is when ‘tomorrow’ never comes. It’s the consistent shutting down of a topic, leaving it unresolved indefinitely. One is a tactic for better communication; the other is a barrier to it.

### How Online Couples Counselling Can Help

This is often the point where couples consider getting some support. The idea of [online couples counselling](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/is-online-couples-counselling-effective) isn't to force you into a confrontation you’re not ready for. It's about creating a new kind of space for your conversations. A space with structure, guidance, and a neutral third party to ensure you both feel heard.

A couples therapist can help you both understand the pattern of avoidance in your relationship without blame. We can help you find the words and the courage to talk about what's really going on, turning down the emotional temperature so that you can actually listen to each other. We provide practical [couples communication help](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/blog-communication-in-relationships) that you can use outside of the sessions.

The flexibility of [online marriage counselling](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/blog-online-marriage-counselling) means you can have these sessions from your own home, at a time that works for you both. There's no travel, no car parks, just a dedicated hour to focus on your relationship. Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session. And because we work on a session-by-session basis, you remain in control with no long-term commitment.

Learning how to talk again is about learning what healthy, supportive communication actually looks like in practice, a subject we explore in our article on _What Healthy Communication Actually Looks Like_.

### Breaking the Silence, Gently

If you recognise this pattern, please know that it’s a fixable problem. The silence doesn't have to be permanent. The first step is simply acknowledging that the avoidance itself has become the issue.

Counselling provides the support to help you both learn new ways to connect and talk, even when it’s difficult. It helps you work together as a team to _resolve relationship conflict_, rather than letting silence push you further apart.

If you feel it's time to find a way to start talking again, we're here to help. You can book a one-off session of [online couple therapy](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/blog-online-couple-therapy) with us easily and confidentially. It could be the first step towards closing the distance.
