# How to Talk About Difficult Things Without Shutting Down

July 18, 2026 4 min read

You see it in their eyes. The shutters coming down. Or perhaps you feel it in yourself – a wall going up, a sudden, overwhelming urge to just… stop. The conversation, which already felt fragile, loses all its energy. And a heavy silence falls where connection used to be.

One of you might leave the room. The other might retreat into their phone. The original issue is left hanging in the air, unresolved and likely to reappear with even more emotional weight next time.

This pattern of shutting down during conflict is incredibly common. From what I can tell, it’s rarely about a lack of love or not caring. It’s almost always a protective mechanism. When the emotional temperature rises, our brains can feel overwhelmed, a state psychologists sometimes call ‘flooding’. It’s a primal response to perceived danger, and in that moment, retreating feels like the only way to stay safe.

### The Quiet Damage of Avoidance

The problem is, what feels like self-preservation in the moment can slowly erode a relationship over time. When difficult subjects are consistently shut down, you create a list of forbidden topics. This is often what happens when conversations keep getting [avoided](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/avoidance-in-relationships); the space for genuine connection just gets smaller and smaller.

Resentment can build quietly. One partner may feel abandoned or silenced, while the other feels constantly on edge, worried about saying the wrong thing. You end up trying to manage each other’s moods instead of solving problems as a team.

But what does changing this actually look like in practice?

### Changing the Conversation, One Step at a Time

Learning to talk about difficult things is a skill, not a personality trait. Like any skill, it takes practice. Here are a few things that I’ve found can make a real difference.

#### 1\. Agree on a Time

So many fraught conversations start badly because the timing is off. Ambushing your partner when they are tired, stressed, or walking in the door is a recipe for defensiveness. Instead, try saying: “I’d really like to talk about \[the issue\] at some point. When would be a good time for you later today or this weekend?” This shows respect and allows you both to prepare.

#### 2\. The Power of the Pause

This is a simple but powerful tool. Agree beforehand that either of you can call a ‘pause’ if you feel overwhelmed or are about to shut down. The person calling the pause has to say when they will be ready to resume the talk (e.g., “I need 20 minutes to clear my head, can we pick this up then?”). This isn’t avoidance; it’s emotional regulation. It stops you from saying things you’ll regret.

#### 3\. Stay on a Single Topic

It’s tempting to bring up past hurts or a whole list of related complaints. But this is guaranteed to cause the other person to feel attacked and withdraw. Stick rigidly to one specific issue. If other things come up, acknowledge them and agree to discuss them at another time. This helps the conversation feel manageable rather than like a personal attack.

### How Online Couples Counselling Can Help

Sometimes, these patterns are so ingrained that it’s hard to change them on your own. This is where professional support can be invaluable. In [online couples counselling](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/how-we-can-help), a therapist provides a neutral space where these conversations can happen more safely.

We can help slow things down, ensuring you both get to speak and, just as importantly, feel heard. A therapist can help you identify the moment before the shutdown happens and give you tools to do something different. It’s about learning how to communicate in a way that builds what emotionally supportive relationships look like, rather than dismantling them.

This kind of guided communication is crucial for tackling the most challenging issues, from intimacy issues counselling to rebuilding trust after [an affair](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/how-we-can-help/infidelity-or-affairs). Having that third person in the room (even a virtual room) can lower the temperature and create the security needed to finally talk.

Our approach at Online Couples Counselling is flexible and designed to fit modern lives. We offer online sessions via Zoom, so you can find a time that works for you both without the stress of travel. You book one session at a time, with no long-term commitment. Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session.

Learning to navigate difficult conversations is one of the most important investments you can make in your relationship's future. It’s not about never disagreeing; it’s about learning how to handle disagreement in a way that ultimately brings you closer.

If you feel ready to try a different way of talking, we’re here to help. You can book an online session directly through our website at a time that suits you both.
