# That Feeling In The Air

June 25, 2026 4 min read

## That Feeling in the Air

Most couples know the feeling.

Nothing particularly serious has happened. One of you asks a question. The other answers a little more abruptly than usual. There is a pause that seems to last just a little too long.

Without either of you saying it out loud, something changes.

You can almost feel the atmosphere in the room shift.

Many couples tell us they know exactly when this happens. They cannot always explain why, but they both sense they are only minutes away from another argument.

Interestingly, those few minutes before the disagreement often tell us far more about the relationship than the argument itself.

## The Argument Usually Starts Long Before Anyone Raises Their Voice

People often assume arguments begin with the first harsh comment.

In reality, they usually begin much earlier.

Perhaps you've both had difficult days. One of you has been carrying worries about work. The other feels overwhelmed by family responsibilities. Neither person has had the chance to properly switch off.

When emotional reserves are running low, even ordinary conversations can feel loaded with meaning.

A forgotten text becomes "You don't care."

A distracted reply becomes "You're not listening."

A sigh becomes criticism.

Very quickly, both partners stop responding to what is actually being said and begin reacting to what they fear it means.

This is often how [emotional distance starts to grow](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/blog-emotional-neglect-in-relationship-online-couples-counselling). Couples become increasingly cautious around each other because everyday conversations no longer feel emotionally safe.

## Your Brain Is Trying to Protect You

When couples repeatedly experience conflict, their brains become remarkably good at spotting signs that another disagreement may be coming.

The difficulty is that the brain does not always distinguish between genuine danger and emotional discomfort.

A change in your partner's tone.

A slightly different facial expression.

A delayed response.

All of these can trigger a protective reaction before you've consciously thought about what's happening.

You might notice yourself becoming defensive, withdrawing emotionally, or preparing your response before your partner has even finished speaking.

Neither of you is necessarily trying to create conflict.

You're both trying to avoid getting hurt.

## The Warning Signs Couples Often Miss

One of the biggest changes we see in therapy is that couples become better at recognising these early moments.

Instead of only noticing the argument itself, they begin recognising what happens beforehand.

Some common signs include:

- Conversations becoming noticeably shorter.
- Feeling irritated without fully understanding why.
- Assuming negative intentions before asking questions.
- Avoiding eye contact or becoming emotionally quieter.
- Feeling yourself preparing for another disagreement.

Once you notice these patterns, they become much easier to interrupt.

This is one reason why [online couples counselling provides](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/is-online-couples-counselling-effective) such practical support. Rather than focusing only on resolving arguments afterwards, therapy helps couples recognise the moments where things first begin to unravel.

## Changing the Pattern

Breaking the cycle rarely happens because one person finds the perfect words.

It usually happens because both partners learn to slow the conversation down.

Sometimes simply acknowledging what's happening changes everything.

"I feel like we're becoming tense."

"Can we slow this down?"

"I don't think either of us wants another argument."

Comments like these shift the conversation away from blame and back towards understanding.

Many couples also benefit from agreeing to pause conversations before emotions become overwhelming, rather than waiting until someone walks away or says something they later regret.

This forms the foundation of [couples communication help](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/the-improtance-of-good-communication-in-relationships). It allows both people to respond thoughtfully instead of reacting automatically.

## Why Online Couples Counselling Helps

One of the advantages of therapy is having someone who can notice patterns that are almost invisible when you're living them every day.

During sessions we often hear couples say, "We've never realised we both do that."

Understanding your relationship pattern is often the beginning of changing it.

Whether you're struggling with repeated arguments, emotional distance or feeling misunderstood, support such as [relationship advice online](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/online-relationship-help) and [online marriage counselling](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/blog-marriage-counselling-online) can help you understand what's happening beneath the surface, rather than simply managing the latest disagreement.

## You Don't Have to Keep Repeating the Same Cycle

If you are struggling with this in your relationship, we offer online couples counselling across the UK.

Sessions are booked on a session-by-session basis, with no obligation to continue.

Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session.

You can view our therapists, choose who feels right for you both, check availability and book online at a time that suits you.
