# Breaking the Same Relationship Patterns

August 5, 2026 5 min read

It starts with something tiny, doesn’t it? A comment about who is meant to be sorting out dinner. Or the way one of you loads the dishwasher. And before you know it, you’re back in that same argument. The one you’ve had a hundred times before.

The words might change, but the feeling is identical. That sinking feeling in your stomach, the rising frustration. One of you might get louder, desperate to be heard. The other might go quiet, shutting down to escape the conflict. If this sounds painfully familiar, you’re not going mad. You’re stuck in a relationship pattern. And a key part of our work with couples is showing them that a different path is possible through [online relationship therapy](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/blog-online-couple-therapy).

I’ve found that by the time couples reach out for help, they are often completely exhausted by these cycles. It’s like being actors in a play where you both know the lines, you know the ending, but you can't seem to stop performing it night after night. Each of you feels misunderstood, and you’ve probably both given up trying to explain your side.

### What’s Really Going On?

These repetitive fights are rarely about the topic you’re arguing over. They aren't really about the bins or being five minutes late. They are almost always about a deeper, unmet emotional need.

From what I can tell after working with hundreds of couples, these patterns are usually a protest. One person is protesting, “Do you see me? Do I matter to you?” while the other is protesting, “Can you accept me as I am? Why am I never good enough?”

These are the raw, vulnerable questions underneath the anger and silence. But because they are so hard to say out loud, they come out sideways – as criticism, defensiveness, or withdrawal. Over time, this dance becomes so ingrained that you can trigger the whole cycle with just a look or a tone of voice.

And it's a cycle that can become particularly destructive after a major breach of trust. If you're seeking [counselling for infidelity](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/infidelity-couple-counselling), for instance, you'll know that every small disagreement can feel loaded with the weight of that past pain, pulling you right back into a pattern of accusation and defence.

### How Online Relationship Therapy Breaks the Cycle

So, how do you get out of it? This is where [effective online relationship therapy](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/is-online-couples-counselling-effective) can make a significant difference. It’s not about finding out who is ‘right’ and who is ‘wrong’. Honestly, that's a question that keeps you stuck. It’s about having a third person in the room (virtually, of course) who isn’t caught up in your history.

As therapists, our job is to help you both slow down and see the pattern for what it is. We act as a sort of translator, helping you hear the real question underneath the angry words. When your partner says, “You never help around the house!” we can help you both explore the feeling beneath it, which might be, “I feel alone in this and I’m overwhelmed.”

That is a conversation you can actually solve together. An argument about who is laziest? Not so much.

The convenience of [online couples counselling](https://onlinecouplescounselling.com/blog/couples-counseling-online) means you can have these crucial conversations from your own home, a space where you already feel comfortable. There’s no travel, no car park stress – you just log on. For some, this can lower the intensity and make it feel easier to be open.

### Learning a New Way to Talk

A lot of our work in online couple therapy is about giving you the tools to step out of the pattern yourselves. We help you recognise the moment it’s about to start and choose a different response. It’s a bit like learning a new language.

At first, it feels clunky and unnatural to pause instead of reacting. It feels strange to say, “I’m feeling defensive right now, can we slow down?” instead of firing back a counter-accusation. But with practice, it becomes your new normal. You start to build a new, more constructive pattern.

I’ve seen couples who were on the brink, considering what they called “emergency marriage counselling,” begin to find their way back to each other. Not by ignoring their problems, but by learning to talk about them without the conversation spiralling out of control.

It’s about creating a space where it feels safe enough for both of you to put your real feelings on the table. When that happens, you stop being opponents in a fight and start being a team solving a problem. And that changes everything.

### Taking the First Step

Recognising you’re stuck in a pattern is a huge first step. It means you’re already looking for a way out. The next step is getting some help to navigate it.

We offer a straightforward, session-by-session approach. There’s no long-term commitment required, giving you the flexibility to see how it works for you. Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session. It's a dedicated hour for you both to pause the chaos and focus on finding a better way forward.

If you're tired of having the same conversation and are ready to try a new one, we’re here to help. Please get in touch to book your first online session.
