Online Couples Counsellor

Hello my name is Stefanie Wilson and I am a fully qualified and experienced MBACP (Snr. Accredited) Counsellor and Psychotherapist for Online Couples Counselling. I am an ‘integrative therapist’ which means I combine different therapeutic tools and approaches to suit each individual couples’ situation.

I have over 20 years’ experience providing therapy for both individuals and couples counselling. This has been in a variety of settings including my own private practice.

My approach to couples counselling

Firstly, I will ask you both what your goals are for seeking online couples counselling. Whether you would like some help to make your relationship work better than it might be currently. Whether you would like help in separating. Or, whether one or both of you are unsure about what you hope to achieve out of the therapy. Your answer doesn’t matter but I will tailor the relationship counselling in order to help you get there.

Secondly, I will ask about your relationship history. This is in order to identify what the issues are within the relationship for each person.  It may be that you have communication problems or a breakdown in trust. Perhaps anger or hurt is bubbling under the surface relating to past events and you are struggling to move on from them.

These could be recent incidents or long-standing childhood issues. By identifying the root cause of your problems can help you understand why you react in what might be an unhelpful way. I will help you modify these reactions so you are able to respond in a more rational or perhaps less aggressive manner.

The integrated therapy model

The model I use for online relationship counselling is known as ‘Clarkson 5 Relationship Model’ which involves taking the following approach: –

  1. Making a secure working agreement between us both.
  2. Working person to person with each unique individual; core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard, as the foundations of building an interpersonal alliance between two people.
  3. Exploring any past unresolved issues that may be be transferred to the present relationship.
  4. Helping you both understand any developmental needs as both individuals and as a couple.
  5. Working with the ‘Transpersonal Therapy’ which takes a more holistic approach – addressing mental, physical, social, emotional, creative, and intellectual needs. Which might include art, visualization, mindfulness or journaling.

My experience

I am experienced in working with drugs & alcohol misuse and may use some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) methods if required. CBT can also help with anxiety, depression and OCD and the impact it might be having on a relationship.

I have a vast life experience, which includes bringing up two cross-cultural children. Two step-children and I enjoy spending time with my five grandchildren.

Continuing my professional development is part of being a member of the ‘British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapist (BACP). This means I keep up to date with the latest techniques in therapy. Which also involves life coaching methods to help couples move forward more positively in whichever way they choose.

Ethical standards

I subscribe to and work within the BACP ethical framework. Therefore, I take regular professional development and supervision. Alongside having professional indemnity insurance.
