When 'I Miss You' Isn't Quite Enough

    July 28, 20264 min read

The Silence After the Call Ends

The video call ends and the screen goes black. For a moment, it feels like they were right there with you. But the sudden silence in the room is a stark reminder of the miles between you. That feeling is one so many long-distance couples know intimately.

You say “I miss you” and you mean it, but sometimes the words feel hollow. They don’t capture the frustration of a dropped call, a misinterpreted text, or the quiet ache of knowing you can’t just reach out and touch their hand.

It’s not the distance itself that’s always the hardest part. It’s the way the distance magnifies everything else. Small misunderstandings can fester, and conversations can start to feel like logistical updates rather than genuine connection.

More Than Just Missing Each Other

Many of the couples we work with describe a kind of performance pressure. Every call has to be ‘quality time’. Every conversation is expected to be meaningful because you have so few of them. This pressure can, ironically, make it harder to be yourselves.

You might find you’re avoiding difficult topics. After all, who wants to spoil a precious hour together with an argument? But those unspoken issues don’t disappear. They just get buried, creating a subtle but growing distance that has nothing to do with geography. It's a strange echo of the feeling some couples have when they live together but feel miles apart.

This is where communication in long distance relationships starts to break down. You might be talking every day, but you’re not really connecting. You might even recognise that 'here we go again' feeling as you fall into the same frustrating conversational loops.

Can Therapy Work When You're Not in the Same Room?

This is a question we get asked a lot. And the answer is, absolutely. In fact, for long-distance couples, online couples counselling is uniquely suited to your situation. You’re already used to communicating through a screen; the therapy session simply provides a structure and a guide for those conversations.

Instead of it being another hurdle, the online format becomes the solution. It creates a dedicated, neutral space for you both to log into. It solves the problem of finding a relationship counsellor you can actually see at the same time, in the same place.

Long distance couples therapy isn’t about trying to pretend the distance doesn’t exist. It’s about giving you the specific tools you need to manage it and keep your connection strong.

What Does Long Distance Couples Therapy Look Like?

A therapy session provides a calm space to talk without interruption or the pressure of a ticking clock before one of you has to run. It's a space to finally say the things you’ve been holding back, knowing a therapist is there to help you both listen and be heard.

We work on practical things, such as:

    • Decoding Digital Communication: Learning to understand the meaning behind texts and emails, and how to avoid common digital misunderstandings.
    • Intentional Connection: Moving beyond “how was your day?” to build rituals of connection that help with maintaining intimacy long distance.
    • Navigating Conflict: Developing strategies to handle disagreements constructively when you can’t talk face-to-face.
    • Building a Shared Future: Talking openly about your goals and expectations to ensure you’re both still on the same page, working as a team.

Many couples find it a relief to address these long distance relationship challenges head-on, rather than letting them bubble under the surface. It helps them decide if their relationship issues are something they need help with, even if it doesn't feel ‘that bad’ yet.

    Making It Work for You

We understand that life, especially across different locations, can be complicated. That’s why we offer a flexible, session-by-session approach. There’s no long-term commitment, so you can book appointments as and when you need them.

Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session. For some, this is an investment in their relationship, particularly when the costs of travel or the emotional strain of distance are already high. We know that sometimes when money is tight and you stop talking, the relationship bears the cost.

Therapy doesn't magically erase the miles. What it does is give you a map and a compass. It provides the tools to communicate with clarity and warmth, to manage the inevitable frustrations, and to build a relationship that feels close and connected, no matter where you both are.

If you feel like you’re drifting apart, we’re here to help you build a bridge back to each other. You can book your first online session through our simple online system.
