    About Kay

Hello, my name is Kay Doherty and I am a fully qualified couples and individual counsellor with over 12 years’ experience. I hold a Higher Diploma in Relationship Counselling and I am an accredited member of the BACP. I specialise in relationship counselling for heterosexual and same sex individuals and couples.

I have a great passion for working with couples and individuals experiencing relationship issues. I feel privileged to support clients as they work towards building a more secure base and a deeper connection with each other. Seeing this growth and change is extremely rewarding.

Therapy can be transforming and can help you reach a place where you truly ‘get’ each other. I understand the importance of empathy, taking time to understand where you are in your relationship, and giving you both the space and time to listen to one another.

I appreciate that coming to therapy may feel daunting, particularly if it is your first time. My priority is to ensure you feel comfortable and at ease. I will make sure that you both have the time and space to be heard, to explain why you have come to therapy, and to explore what you would like to achieve from the process.

By the end of counselling, many couples feel more hopeful about their future together. You can develop the skills to recognise when you may be slipping back into negative cycles and learn how to respond differently. As communication improves, you can begin to hear and understand each other again, replacing old patterns with greater love, understanding and security.

    Background & Experience

I have over 12 years of experience as a qualified couple counsellor, but my history of working and communicating with people from all walks of life spans much longer. Prior to my counselling career, I worked as a reflexologist for many years, where being a good listener, showing empathy, and maintaining confidentiality were essential to my practice.

My background also includes significant volunteer work, including providing support at a local hospice and assisting with an adult literacy group. These roles involved working with both individuals and groups on sensitive issues, further strengthening my ability to provide a respectful and supportive environment for my clients today.
