About Lynn Garbutt
My approach to relationship therapy…
….is down to earth and common-sense, so I will help you work through your issues step by step. I may draw upon the tools of CBT to gently challenge you both about the negative impact any unhelpful behaviours might be having on the relationship. Together we will work on finding any negative patterns of behaviour (which includes the way you speak to each other) which are impacting your relationship. People are often unaware of how their reactions/behaviours might be having a detrimental effect on their partner. Couples often describe having the same arguments over and over again without understanding how their own actions are contributing to the problems. I will ensure that you are always comfortable and will take an active role during our sessions by helping you both reflect back each other’s perspective. Background/Experience
Prior to qualifying as a CBT therapist and Couples Counsellor I taught adult literacy and numeracy for a number of Years. This was within Adult Education and the prison service. I hold an NVQ qualification in training and development. It became apparent to me, during this time, that students often had more barriers to learning than just poor education or lack of schooling. Confidence and the anxiety of being judged negatively, were obstacles that needed to be addressed and overcome, before any real learning could take place. This led me to choosing to retrain to become a therapist.
I also volunteered for a number of years for the ‘Silverline Charity’ as a telephone friend to lonely, older people. Eventually, I trained as an instructor for new volunteers and found this experience immensely rewarding.
