What Happens in the First Couples Counselling Session?
Taking that first step towards couples counselling can feel daunting. You might be wondering what will happen, what you’ll be asked, or whether you’ll have to talk about everything straight away. The good news is that the first session is simply a relaxed conversation designed to help you both feel comfortable and heard.
At Online Couples Counselling, your first appointment is about understanding what has brought you here, what you each hope to gain, and how we can best support you moving forward.
Creating a Safe Space to Talk
Your therapist’s main goal is to create a safe and balanced space where both of you can speak freely. You’ll be invited to share what’s been happening in your relationship and what you’d like to work on. There’s no pressure to say the “right thing” this is simply a chance to begin the conversation.
Many couples feel relieved to discover that the therapist isn’t there to take sides or judge. Instead, they’ll guide you through an open discussion so each partner has the chance to be heard and understood.
Exploring What’s Brought You Here
During the first session, your therapist will usually ask a few gentle questions about your relationship history, your communication patterns, and any recent challenges. This helps them get a full picture of what’s been happening so they can tailor sessions to your needs.
Some couples attend because they’ve had a specific event, like a betrayal or major life change. Others come because they’ve slowly drifted apart or struggle to communicate. Whatever your reason, this first session is about understanding your unique story.
Agreeing How You’ll Work Together
Towards the end of the session, your therapist will outline how future sessions might look and how often you might like to meet. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions, discuss availability, and agree how you’ll both know when progress is being made.
At Online Couples Counselling, sessions are held securely via Zoom, so you can talk openly from home at a time that suits you. Everything you share remains confidential, and you can book each appointment on a session-by-session basis — there’s no tie-in or long-term commitment.
Leaving Your First Session Feeling Hopeful
Most couples leave their first session feeling more hopeful and connected than when they arrived. Simply having space to talk without interruption or defensiveness can make a huge difference. You may not solve everything in one hour, but you’ll start to understand what’s possible when you work together with professional support.
